M. Shadows è stato intervistato da The Journal of Montreal’s sull’album, sul tour e sul perché non suonano altre canzoni di Hail to the king prima dell’uscita dell’album.

Can we expect to hear new material at [Heavy MTL]?
MS: No, not really. We prefer to wait a bit before presenting our new songs, simply because fans have not had the chance to listen to the album. In addition, we do not want videos of our news pieces circulating on YouTUbe. We worked on these songs for a year, so we want people to discover them in the best possible conditions. However, we will present our first single ‘Hail To The King.’ We also play ‘Carry On,’ a song we made for the game Call Of Duty: Black Ops II.
Your last album, Nightmare, was released in 2010. You must be anxious to present your new songs to your fans.
MS: We especially look forward to presenting them on stage with new production. We will embark on this new tour in release of the album.
You are often on the road. How have you adapted to this lifestyle?
MS: We toured a lot in recent years, it is true, but we were also able to take a year off to work on the album. For us, this life on the road, this is a cakewalk. I must say that we are all good friends. We never feel like it’s work. We really enjoy the free time that we have to have fun. We’re going out to eat, play at casinos… There was worse, I assure you.
When did you start creating your new album?
MS: We started writing in September. […] When we felt we were ready, we went into the studio. We recorded the album in seven weeks. We knew exactly where we were going.
As was the case on Nightmare, you chose to work with Mike Elizondo.
MS: He’s one of the best musicians I’ve had the chance to meet in my life. He’s also a great songwriter. I respect him enormously. He was able to make connections so we could get exactly what we wanted. He has our trust.
Since the launch of your first single, Hail To The King, comments about it on social networks say you sound like a mixture of Iron Maiden and Metallica. What do you think about the comparisons?
MS: Our fans have grown up with several music groups, so we do not always have the same references. I can tell you we’re very pleased to be compared to bands like Iron Maiden and Metallic. There’s worse. All groups are compared at one time or another, even Metallica and the Rolling Stones have been there. What matters ultimately is the music and longevity.
Musically, what did you want to accomplish with this album?
MS: This record is about power and groove. Some of our albums are more eclectic, while others are more aggressive. The goal with this was to bring the rhythms and develop riffs around them. “Simple” is not a word our fans like to hear, but I’d say it’s bare bones.

MS: In realtà no. Preferiamo aspettare un po’ prima di presentare le nuove canzoni, semplicemente perché i fan non hanno avuto l’occasione di sentire l’album. In più non vogliamo video dei nostri nuovi pezzi su Youtube. Abbiamo lavorato alle canzoni per un anno, quindi vogliamo che le persone le scoprano nelle migliori condizioni. Comunque abbiamo presentato il nostro primo singolo “Hail to the king”. Abbiamo anche suonato “Carry on” la canzone che abbiamo fatto per il gioco Call of Duty: Black Ops II.
Il vostro scorso album, Nightmare, è stato rilasciato nel 2010. Siete ansiosi di presentare le vostre nuove canzoni ai fan?
MS: Siamo particolarmente lieti di presentarle a loro sul palco con la nuova produzione. Ci si impegnerà in questo nuovo tour in uscita del disco.
Siete spesso in giro in tour. Come avete adattato i vostri stili di vita?
MS: Abbiamo girato molto negli ultimi anni, è vero, ma siamo in grado di prenderci un anno di pausa per lavorare all’album. Per noi la vita in strada, è una passeggiata. Posso dire che siamo tutti buoni amici. Non sentiamo mai che è un lavoro. Ci divertiamo davvero nel tempo libero che abbiamo per divertirci. Andiamo fuori a mangiare, al casinò…c’è stato di peggio, ve l’assicuro.
Quando avete iniziato a creare il nuovo album?
MS: Abbiamo iniziato a scrivere a Settembre. Quando abbiamo sentito di essere pronti siamo entrati in studio. Abbiamo registrato l’album un sette settimane. Sapevamo esattamente dove volevamo andare.
Come nel caso di Nightmare, avete scelto di lavorare con Mike Elizondo.
MS: è uno dei migliori musicisti che ho conosciuto nella vita. È anche un ottimo scrittore di canzoni. Lo rispetto enormemente. È stato in grado di creare connessioni così che noi potessimo ottenere esattamente quello che volevamo. Ha la nostra fiducia.
Da quando è stato lanciato il vostro primo singolo, Hail to the king, I commenti su di esso nei social network dicono che suona come un misto tra Iron Maiden e Metallica. Cosa pensate del paragone?
MS: I nostri fan sono cresciuti con parecchi gruppi musicali, quindi non abbiamo sempre gli stessi riferimenti. Posso dirti che siamo contenti di essere paragonati a band come Iron Maiden e Metallica. C’è di peggio. Tutti i gruppi sono paragonati in un momento o in un altro, anche i Metallica e i Rolling Stones ci sono passati. Cosa conta ultimamente è la musica e la longevità.
Musicalmente, cosa volete ottenere con quest’album?
MS: questo album è sulla Potenza e sul groove. Alcuni dei nostri album sono più eclettici, mentre altri più aggressivi. L’obiettivo di questo è stato quello di portare i ritmi e sviluppare riff intorno a loro. “Semplice” non è una parola che i nostri fan vogliono sentire, ma io direi che è essenziale.
