Metal Hammer Germany ha rilasciato una interessante intervista di M. Shadows e Zacky Vengeance. Leggetela, così vi toglierete qualche dubbio.

Congratulazioni, avete vinto il nostro ‘Soundcheck’ per la prima volta in assoluto! Perché HAIL TO THE KING è migliore rispetto al suo predecessore NIGHTMARE?
M. Shadows: Non è meglio, solo diverso. NIGHTMARE è stato molto emozionante – è per questo che un sacco di fan non possono ascoltarlo a lungo. Hail to the King è più semplice e ritorna alle origini.
Zacky Vengeance: NIGHTMARE è un passaggio molto scuro. Non puoi ripetere una cosa del genere. Il nuovo album è un mostro. Le chitarre sono massicce, il basso tuona e le parti vocali sono molto potenti. I nostri fan Heavy Metal e Hard Rock saranno felici.
NIGHTMARE salì sul numero uno nelle classifiche statunitensi. Sentite più pressione dopo un tale successo?
M.: No. Stiamo solo cinque amici che gironzolano intorno a casa, ascoltano musica e la creano. Non è un grosso problema. È come con i Rolling Stones: Keith e Mick semplicemente facevano fuori qualche riff, aggiungono alcuni testi e dicono l’un l’altro: a chi piace, piace. Nel momento in cui inizia a pensarci troppo, è il momento in cui inizi a distruggere te stesso e la propria musica.
I nostri colleghi del Metal Hammer britannico vi hanno annunciato come la band metal più importante della nostra generazione.
M.: Sì, mi ricordo. * Ride * Sto scherzando. Spero che abbiamo una buona influenza sui ragazzi che considerano la musica più heavy. Non vorrei mai dire però che siamo la band più importante.
Zacky: Questo è un enorme complimento. Siamo entusiasti di mostrare ai ragazzi che si può effettivamente avere successo con il fare la cosa che ami. Andare là fuori e creare musica! Questo è il messaggio.
Nel 2011 avete fatto una pausa. Era necessario, anche a causa della morte del batterista James ‘The Rev’ Sullivan, in modo che A7x potessero sopravvivere?
Zacky: Non abbiamo davvero avuto una vera pausa fino al 2011. Abbiamo fatto un altro passo in tutto il mondo con nightmare, soprattutto considerando il tour. Il che era strano dato che abbiamo dovuto lottare molto con questo album a causa di morte James ‘. Poi è diventato un enorme successo tale che non abbiamo davvero avuto il tempo di affrontarlo correttamente. Quindi era chiaro che avevamo bisogno di una pausa.
M.: La band non sarebbe morta senza una pausa visto che siamo semplicemente migliori amici. Ma era importante avere una visione per il nuovo album. Perché non c’era nessuno, alla fine del tour.
Cosa avete fatto in questo periodo?
M.: Ho avuto un figlio nel frattempo. E ‘stato bello vederlo crescere nel suo primo anno.
Che cosa hai fatto, Zacky?
Zacky: Sono stato con la mia famiglia, guardato la TV, bevuto troppo, mangiato troppo, e siamo andati a un sacco di spettacoli di wrestling e concerti come band. Abbiamo semplicemente vissuto normalmente, come tutti gli altri. Un giorno è diventato noioso e abbiamo deciso di iniziare a fare di nuovo musica.
James ha scritto un sacco di vostre canzoni. È stato difficile sostituire le sue abilità di songwriting?
M.: James ha scritto canzoni fantastiche. Ma i media davvero esagerano su questo argomento. Per l’album, c’erano forse due o tre canzoni che aveva scritto. Anche se, ovviamente, ci siamo detti dopo le prime sette canzoni del nuovo disco: “Ragazzi, sarebbe meraviglioso se avessimo avuto altri tre brani di James.” Ma non l’abbiamo fatto.
Gli piacerebbe il nuovo album?
M.: Lo avrebbe amato. Se conosci qualcuno dalla tua infanzia, semplicemente sai che cosa sarebbe stato di suo gradimento. Da un certo punto in poi, diventi tu stesso quella persona. Ci manca? Fuck yeah!
I fan saranno sorpresi?
M.: Li sorprendiamo sempre. Continuano a dirci: “Speriamo che sia più veloce e ancora più pazzo”, ma non lo è.
Avete già avuto delle seccature con il primo singolo ‘Hail To The King’.
M.: Io non presto attenzione a questo. Un sacco di fan non sanno nemmeno da dove veniamo, anche se gli piacciamo. So che le bande, che ci influenzano, sono grandi. E so anche che l’album black dei Metallica è grande – anche se un sacco di gente lo odiava a prima.
Per me, il singolo suona un bel po ‘come gli Iron Maiden. Sono loro i re?
M.: Di sicuro, ci sono un sacco di re per me. Gli Iron Maiden sono sicuramente una parte di loro, così come i Metallica. E lo puoi sentire. Ci sono sempre i critici che continuamente ci paragonano a queste bande.
Vi da fastidio questo?
M.: Nah. Quello che è successo già prima. Siamo stati paragonati a gruppi come i Beatles, i Rolling Stones, in seguito poi Led Zeppelin e Black Sabbath. È proprio così. Ma noi pensiamo che la gente si fermerà in futuro.
Zacky: Amo tutte quelle band e mi turba me di essere messo in una fila con loro. Ma poi di nuovo, nessuno di loro ha una voce come M. Shadows ha, nessuno ha il nostro sound e nessuna di queste band ha scritto canzoni come ‘A Little Piece Of Heaven’.
M.: O ‘Acid Rain’ dal nuovo album. Suona più come Elton John. * Ride *
Ci sono carriere mondiali, come ad esempio quelle di Iron Maiden e Metallica, possibili in questi giorni?
M.: Assolutamente! Guardate quanti fan vengono fuori per i grandi concerti. La musica rock ha bisogno di grandi band – in modo che un festival in Germania come il Rock am ring sia governato dal metal. Se i gruppi metal più grandi avressero lasciato, ci sarebbe stato solo il rock alternativo. Volete Mumford & Sons per essere headliner del festival? Io no! Ma è incredibile che i gruppi, come Volbeat e Ghost, stiano lentamente salendo verso l’alto. Quelli saranno enormi headliners un giorno.
Zacky: Devi solo essere sempre in vena di continuare a spingere te stesso. Guardate Metallica: Hanno aperto concerti per Bon Jovi prima dell’album black. Questo è del tutto surreale dal punto di vista di oggi.
M.: Devi sfidare la folla in modo che essa stessa ti porti al livello successivo. La band che ha fatto questo per decenni, ora è ancora in giro – e quelli sono i Metallica. Se c’è un nuovo CD, tutti vogliono sentire come suona.
Vi piace la nuova roba dei Metallica?
M.: Sì, semplicemente adoro sentire la voce di James, gli assolo di Kirk e la semplice batteria di Lars. Mi piace anche ST. ANGER. Potrebbero mettere rumori di scoregge su un CD e vorrei ancora comprarlo. * Ride *
Zacky: Io non mi sento a mio agio con LULU. * Ride * Ma era bello perché era un esperimento. Io non ho davvero capito. * Ride *
M.: E ‘stato così impressionante perché tutti quanti lo odiavano completamente. Ma alla fine, è solo musica, dopo tutto, può piacerti o no. Dobbiamo davvero discuterne di nuovo?
Sei incredibilmente famosi negli Stati Uniti. Come mai non in Germania?
M.: Diccelo tu! * Ride * Non ci hanno prestato abbastanza attenzione in Germania in passato. È pazzesco: Ovunque suoniamo in enormi arene, e quando arriviamo a Germania, suoniamo in piccoli club. Vogliamo portare lo show completo adesso per la prima volta nel mese di novembre. Sarà impressionante.
M.: La mia band tedesca preferita sono i Blind Guardian. Non sono mai venuti negli Stati Uniti. La Germania non è così dipendente dai gruppi metal americani, ha ottenuto il suo propria enorme scena. Altri paesi europei no e sbirciano di più negli Stati Uniti. Ed è per questo che ci vuole più tempo per guadagnare il rispetto in Germania. Questo è il motivo di questa intervista, oggi. Vogliamo finalmente costruire un vero e proprio rapporto con i fans tedeschi.
Un sacco di fan metal tedeschi hanno un’immagine negativa di voi ragazzi nella loro testa e vi considerano come poseri. Potrebbe essere anche a causa delle immagini del passato?
M.: Questo è naturalmente possibile. Per i pochi show che abbiamo suonato qui, i promotori utilizzano per lo più le immagini che sono state in parte prese nel 2002. Abbiamo indossato modo troppo trucco allora. Terribile.
Zacky: che svanisce dopo qualche tempo però. Guardate i Pantera e le loro foto per POWER METAL. * Ride * avrebbero avuto successo con quelle foto, anni dopo? Siamo uomini adulti ora e ridiamo sulle nostre vecchie foto. Io sicuramente non vorrei mai più vestirmi in quel modo. * Ride * Speriamo che voi ragazzi mostriate le nuove foto.
Ovviamente, anche i capelli così lunghi possono essere visti come un bene. Come è successo?
M.: Li ho lasciati crescere prima di tagliarli. * Ride * Volevo tagliarli dopo la scrittura del nuovo album. Ma poi sono diventati troppo lunghi cosicché non voglio più tagliarli.
E cosa ne pensa tua moglie?
M.: Li odia! * Ride * “

Congratulations, you won our ‘Soundcheck’ for the first time ever! Why is HAIL TO THE KING better than its forerunner NIGHTMARE?
M. Shadows: It’s not better, just different. NIGHTMARE was very emotional – which is why a lot of fans can’t listen to it all the way through. HAIL TO THE KING is simpler and back to the roots.
Zacky Vengeance: NIGHTMARE had a very dark transient. You can’t repeat something like that. The new record is a monster. The guitars are massive, the bass thunders and the vocals are very powerful. Our Heavy Metal and Hard Rock fans will be joyful.
NIGHTMARE climbed onto number one in the US charts. Do you feel more pressure after such a success?
M.: No. We’re just five friends who hang around at home, listen to music and also create some. It’s not a big deal. It’s like with the Rolling Stones: Keith and Mick simply blast off some riffs, add some lyrics and say to each other: Whoever likes it, likes it. The moment you start to think too much about it, is the moment you start destroying yourself and your music.
Our colleagues from the British Metal Hammer announced you as the most important metal band of our generation.
M.: Yeah, I remember that. *laughs* Just kidding. I hope that we have a good influence on the kids considering heavier music. I would never say though that we’re the most important band.
Zacky: That’s a huge compliment. We’re excited to show the kids that you can actually have success with doing the thing you love. Go out there and create music! That’s the message.
In 2011 you took off to have a break. Was it necessary, also due to the death of your past drummer, James ‘the Rev’ Sullivan, so that A7x could live on?
Zacky: We didn’t really have a proper break until 2011. We jumped up another step worldwide with NIGHTMARE, especially considering touring. Which was weird since we had to fight a lot with that album due to James’ death. Then it became such a huge success that we didn’t really have time to properly deal with it. So it was clear that we needed a break.
M.: The band wouldn’t have died without a break though since we’re simply best friends. But it was important to get a vision for the new record. Because there was none at the end of the tour.
For what did you use your time out?
M.: I got a little son meanwhile. It was great to see him grow up in his first year.
What did you do, Zacky?
Zacky: I just hung out with my family, watched TV, drank too much, ate too much, and we went to a lot of wrestling shows and concerts as a band. We simply lived as normal as everybody else. Someday it got boring and we decided to start making music again.
James wrote a lot of your songs. Was it hard to replace his songwriting skills?
M.: James wrote fantastic songs. But the media really blew this whole subject up. Per record, there were maybe two or three songs that he had written. Though, of course, we said to ourselves after the first seven songs of the new record: “Man, it’d be amazing if we had three more songs from James.” But we didn’t.
Would he like the new album?
M.: He’d love it. If you know somebody ever since your childhood, you simply know what would be of his liking. From a certain point on, you actually become that person yourself. Do we miss him? Fuck yeah!
Will the fans be surprised?
M.: We always surprise them. They keep telling us: “Hopefully it’s faster and even crazier!” But it’s not.
You already got them in quite a hassle with your first single ‘Hail To The King’.
M.: I don’t pay attention to that. A lot of fans don’t even know where we’re from, even though they like us. I know that the bands, who influence us, are great. And I also know that Metallica’s black album is great – even though a lot of people hated it at first.
For me, the single sounds a whole lot like Iron Maiden. Are they the kings?
M.: For sure, there are a lot of kings for me. Iron Maiden are definitely a part of them, as well as Metallica. And you can hear that. There are always critics who continuously compare us to these bands.
Does that annoy you?
M.: Nah. That happened before already. We got compared to bands such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, later then Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath. That’s just how it is. But we think that the people will stop with that sometime in the future.
Zacky: I love all of those bands and it kind of unsettles me to be put into one row with them. But then again, none of them have a voice such as M. Shadows has, nobody has our sound and none of these bands have written songs such as ‘A Little Piece Of Heaven’.
M.: Or ‘Acid Rain’ from the new record. Sounds more like Elton John. *laughs*
Are world careers, such as the ones of Iron Maiden and Metallica, even possible these days?
M.: Absolutely! Look at how many fans come out to the big concerts. Rock music needs big bands – also, so that a festival in Germany like Rock am Ring will be ruled by metal. If the bigger metal bands would leave, there’s just alternative rock left. You want Mumford & Sons to be festival headliners? I don’t! But it’s awesome that groups, such as Volbeat and Ghost, are slowly climbing upwards. Those will be huge headliners one day.
Zacky: You just have to always be in the mood to keep pushing yourself. Look at Metallica: They opened up shows for Bon Jovi before the black album. That’s completely surreal from today’s view.
M.: You have to challenge the crowd so that it brings itself and yourself to the next level. The band who’s been doing this for decades now is still around – and that’s Metallica. If there’s a new CD, everybody wants to hear how it sounds.
Do you guys like the newer stuff of Metallica?
M.: Yeah, I simply enjoy listening to James’ voice, Kirk’s solos and Lars’ simple drumming. I also like ST. ANGER. They could press fart noises on a CD and I would still buy it. *laughs*
Zacky: I don’t really get comfortable with LULU. *laughs* But even that was cool because it was an experiment. I just didn’t really understand it. *laughs*
M.: It was so awesome because everybody completely hated it. But in the end, it’s just music after all, you either like it or don’t. Do we really have to discuss it all over again?
You’re unbelievably huge in the US. How come not in Germany?
M.: You tell us! *laughs* We didn’t really pay enough attention to Germany in the past. It’s crazy: Everywhere else we play in huge arenas, and when we come to Germany, we play small clubs. We wanna bring the complete show now for the first time in November. It’s gonna be awesome.
Zacky: I wouldn’t invest time in a band, as a fan either if I had the feeling to never see them live anyway.
M.: My favorite German band are Blind Guardian. They never come to the USA. Germany isn’t so dependent on the American metal bands, it has got its own huge scene. Other European countries don’t and peek a lot more into USA’s direction. Which is why it takes longer to gain respect in Germany. That’s the reason for this interview, for today. We finally want to build up a proper and true relationship with our German fans.
A lot of German metal fans have a negative image of you guys in their heads and consider you as posers. Could that be because of your pictures from the past?
M.: That’s of course possible. For the few shows we played here, the promoters mostly used pictures which were partially taken in 2002. We wore way too much make up back then. Horrible.
Zacky: That fades away after some time though. Look at Pantera and their pictures for POWER METAL. *laughs* Would they have been successful with those pictures, years later? We’re grown men now and laugh about our old photos. I definitely would never ever dress myself like that again. *laughs* Hopefully you guys show the new pictures.
Obviously, also so your long hair can be seen as well. How did that happen?
M.: I let it grow before it all falls out. *laughs* I wanted to shave them off after the writing of the new record. But then they were too long already so that I just couldn’t cut them anymore.
What’s your wife’s opinion on it?
M.: She hates it! *laughs*”
