Blabbermouth riporta un’intervista che Matt ha tenuto con WGRD Radio, una stazione del Michigan in cui pare si sia parlato del nuovo disco, della futura setlist che presenteranno in quello che sembra NON essere un tour promozionale e di Brooks.
Queste le parole esatte di Matt parlando del nuovo disco, apparentemente ancora in fase di composizione:

“Yeah, we’re very wishy-washy. We’re writing, we’ve been throwing stuff around. You know, we’ve been working, and that’s all I can really say about it. I think there’s a lot of speculation online, and we’re just kind of leaving it that way. But when there’s something to be heard, we’ll let the world know. But right now, we’re just still working on stuff.”

“Si, beh siamo molto indecisi. Stiamo componendo e tiriamo fuori di continuo nuove cose. Sai, ci stiamo lavorando e questo è tutto quello che posso davvero dire a riguardo. Penso che ci siano un sacco di speculazioni su internet a riguardo e noi stiamo lasciamo correre. Ma quando ci sarà qualcosa da poter far ascoltare, lo faremo sapere al mondo. Ma per il momento, stiamo ancora lavorando al materiale.”
Continua parlando del tour che stanno per affrontare:

“Right now, on this tour, we’re thinking about going with a really clean, really big look. And since ‘Hail To The King’ is three years old, it really isn’t appropriate to bring out ‘Hail To The King’-themed stuff. So I think what we’re gonna start doing is we’vee been, in rehearsal, bringing out a lot of older things that people haven’t necessarily heard in a long time, or things we’ve never played. Like, we debuted a song called ‘Planets’ the other night, and we’ve been playing a song called ‘Acid Rain’. And we wanna start bringing out some older stuff that people haven’t necessarily heard. So we wanna pack this setlist with stuff that isn’t necessarily all the hits and just kind of come up with a big look, production-wise, while we work on building something much bigger for the future and for the next few runs.”

“In questo momento, durante questo tour, stiamo pensando in modo molto pulito e completo. Visto che Hail to the King ha ormai 3 anni non ci sembra appropriato tirar fuori solo canzoni che vengano da quel disco. Quindi quello che credo faremo è provare molto e magari riproporre canzoni più vecchie che le persone non sentono da anni o che non abbiamo mai proposto live. Ad esempio, abbiamo suonato per la prima volta Planets l’altra sera e abbiamo suonato anche Acid Rain. Vogliamo iniziare a suonare canzoni vecchie che non necessariamente già sono state sentite in questi anni. Vogliamo costruire una setlist con tutte le canzoni che non sono per forza i singoli usciti e cercare di presentare un bello show, con una produzione ben curata mentre continuiamo anche a lavorare per qualcosa di più grande per il futuro e per i prossimi giri.”
Ed infine parla di Brooks e delle cose che lo hanno colpito di lui:

“Well, the process was really easy, because… Well, first off, we had to keep it secret, because we had to respect BAD RELIGION and what he was gonna have to do with telling them that he decided that he wanted to play with us. And we’re huge fans of BAD RELIGION; they’re one of our favorite bands growing up, and they still are — they still put out such great music. And so, for us, it was about just working with him for a year before we even announced it, ‘cause we wanted to make sure he was the right guy. But deep down, we already knew. We’ve known Brooks for years and years and years, and we knew he was just a phenomenal drummer. We knew that there was no way he was gonna have trouble recreating The Rev’s parts and Mike Portnoy’s parts. So, basically, for us, it was about writing with him, and writing songs with him, to see how that went, before we decided to pull the trigger. And so, once we did that, we just knew… I mean, you can show that guy a song and he can learn it in three listens; he’s that good of a drummer. So he’s probably more prepared than we are, honestly, on some of these old songs, especially for the guitar players — they’re playing all these duels and all these solos. And then Brooks, he’s got it down. You can show him and song and he can learn it within a day, which is cool.”

“Beh, il processo è stato molto facile. Insomma, inizialmente abbiamo dovuto mantenere il segreto perchè abbiamo molto rispetto verso i Bad Religion e di quello che avrebbe voluto fare lui nei loro confronti per dirgli che voleva venire a suonare con noi. Noi siamo anche grandi fan dei Bad Religion, sono una delle nostre band preferite con cui siamo cresciuti e lo sono ancora, continuano a fare musica grandiosa. E quindi, per noi, è stata solo questione di lavorarci per un anno prima di poterlo annunciare, perchè volevamo anche essere certi che fosse la persona giusta. Ma infondo, lo sapevamo già. Conosciamo Brooks da anni ed anni e sapevamo che batterista fenomenale fosse. Sapevamo anche che non avrebbe avuto problemi nel ricreare le parti di Jimmy o quelle di Mike. Quindi essenzialmente per noi l’importante era soltanto iniziare a comporre con lui e scrivere nuovi canzoni; vedere come sarebbe andata e poi premere il grilletto. E una volta che lo abbiamo fatto, lo sapevamo.. voglio dire, puoi presentargli una qualunque canzone a questo ragazzo e la saprà imparare con soli 3 ascolti. Questo per spiegare quanto sia bravo.
Probabilmente lui ha anche molta più preparazione di tutti noi, onestamente, anche in alcune vecchie canzoni, anche quando si parla di parti di chitarre che hanno tutti quei duetti o quegli assoli… lui sa perfezionarli. Puoi presentargli una canzone e può impararla in meno di un giorno, il che è fantastico.”

Insomma, il punto della situazione si fa sempre meno chiaro e non sappiamo bene cosa pensare. Ci auguriamo che questo breve tour che inizierà a settembre possa portare ulteriori idee alla band, magari per aiutarla a concludere il ciclo di scrittura per il nuovo disco… che a questo punto sembra slittare all’anno prossimo.
Ma non fa niente, aspetteremo. E magari ci goderemo dal vivo canzoni vecchie e mai proposte prima! Be positive!
