Loudwire ha da poco pubblicato una classifica sui migliori 20 album metal rilasciati nel 2010. Naturalmente non poteva mancare Nightmare degli Avenged Sevenfold che troviamo al secondo posto:
Through tragedy, triumph is often born. Such was the case for Avenged Sevenfold, who were tasked with carrying on with writing sessions for what would become Nightmare following the tragic death of drummer James ‘The Rev’ Sullivan in late 2009. The record featured the last of The Rev’s contributions to the Orange County group and Dream Theater legend Mike Portnoy was tapped to record drums in his place as he was a major influence on the late skinsman. The result was an emotional tug-of-war, highlighted by two wildly differing songs penned solely by M. Shadows — the knuckle-cracking title track and the tender “Buried Alive.”
Attraverso la tragedia, nasce spesso il trionfo. Questo è stato il caso degli Avenged Sevenfold, a cui è stato assegnato il compito di continuare con le sessioni di scrittura per quello che sarebbe diventato Nightmare, in seguito alla tragica morte verso la fine del 2009 del batterista James “The Rev” Sullivan. L’ album contiene gli ultimi contributi di The Rev per il gruppo di Orange County e la legenda dei Dream Theater Mike Portnoy chiamato per registrare le parti di batteria al suo posto, in quanto grande influenza del batterista. Il risultato è stato un emozionante braccio di ferro, messo in risalto da due canzoni estremamente diverse scritte esclusivamente da M. Shadows – la “scrocchia dita” title track e la tenera Buried Alive.
